Life, The Ego, and the Next Dimension

This may turn out to be one of those Enlightening Moments you have been searching for, or it might be something that irritates you to the max…it all depends on your Ego. You may have heard of the psychological terms Id, Ego, and Super Ego. This article will be directed more towards the spiritual explanation of the Ego.
First of all, we need to address the WHY of the Ego: it is the Auto-Pilot of the body (per the Ageless Wisdom teachings). It was never meant to take precedence over the Spirit (which animates the body).
When we first came into embodiment on this planet, we were unused to being confined in a solid, limited, vehicle. Not only was this a boring and frustrating experience; it was oftentimes painful. Some people were unable to manipulate the body properly in time to avoid death of the physical body. (Think of it like having a toddler driving your car—scary, huh?)
The problem was addressed by adding the Auto-Pilot (the Ego). The job of this Ego was to warn, to caution, to advise. The purpose of this Ego was to avoid unnecessary physical death of the vehicle. The Ego did nothing to make it easier to inhabit the physical body; this resulted in our Spirits wanting to spend more time in other, less limited, dimensions. In effect, we left the body to get life experience on its’ own, with the Ego in control. When Hatha Yoga was given to the planet, it was to bring body and spirit together…to cause the Spirit to stay in the body. The improved cohesion of Body and Spirit meant Spirit spent more time in the body.
Unfortunately, over time, the Ego had decided IT was what was real…it became full of itself, and took on a life for its’ own. This takeover spelled disaster for our spiritual evolution…we forgot who and what we are, and where our real home is. The Ego became like a monster control-freak, taking over all decisions. It didn’t take long for the Ego to convince the Brain that It was the rightful owner of the body.
Now, if the Ego was a reasonable, responsible, heart-based Intellect, things would not have gotten so bad on Earth. But, the Ego takes offense easily, looks for things to be in Fear about, and wants everything for itself. It is, in a word, selfish. The Ego either thinks it is superior to everyone else, or inferior…it has no window on Reality, Truth, or Love. The Ego can become a horrible monster, causing pain and suffering not only to the body that houses it, but also to those it encounters.
There are many reasons, and ways, to control the Ego; to put it in its’ proper place. Yes, the Ego does have a place. Without the Ego, we are in danger of death due to fearlessness! The subject of Ego control is addressed by many spiritual practices, and is noted as one of the major requirements for self-mastery. Because it is considered a spiritual necessity, many people have the incorrect notion that to be free of Ego means to appear saintly. People look for a teacher who appears humble…self-effacing…devoid of personality (other than what personality a saint would have) and usually goes by some grand title.
There is a big difference between Ego and Personality. The Personality is the gift we are to the Universe; the clue to our True Essence. These are service oriented personalities: scientist, reader, writer, healer, organizer, supervisor, etc. These are not the designations of this dimension, but rather, the pure Essence of such things. A Reader would be a Personality whose main function is to discover everything possible that is written (in the chosen field of study); to make the important connections that lead Humanity to higher dimensions by discovering the clues left by others who have gone before us.
There are many, many permutations of Personalities in each service class. The unifying principle is Service to the Universe, with Love. We are to Become…to mature, and move the Creation forward, to higher and higher frequencies. Every single one of us is important. Each Personality is unique in the Universe. Like a constantly changing tapestry, the thread of each Human Being contributes to the picture being formed. Each experience, every point of growth, causes us to shine ever brighter.
Eventually, we learn to control the Ego and to put it in its’ proper place. We become more loving, courageous, and tolerant. We bring the great power of our intellect together with the incredible power of our hearts. We come into Unity. When we achieve Unity, we are able to move forward, our place as a species assured.
To get into the next Dimension, there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled. You cannot buy or think your way into it—you must pass the exams proving your worth. There are five things that must be absent from those who attempt to cross into the next Dimension: Ego, Fear, Greed, Judgment, and Prejudice. In addition, there are Virtues that must be present, such as Love, Compassion, Truth, Tolerance, Wisdom, Service, etc.
There is no rest in attaining Mastery over the self. Reaching a higher state of Consciousness in this life means that one moves into a higher level of Service, with more responsibility. We are expected to be more mature with each level we attain; this means the Ego must be dissolved.
Our Awakening involves so much more than just realizing that we each have a Mission to accomplish. It also involves more than just sitting back, saying “It’s all in Divine Order…everything is okay”. There is a lot of work to do on ourselves; let’s get to it. We have everything to lose, and more than the Ego can imagine to gain.
